Eric S. Jackson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Principal Investigator

Dr. Eric S. Jackson is a clinician-scientist and director of the stuttering and vvariability (savvy) lab at NYU. His research examines the variability of stuttering events (i.e., the inconsistency with which stuttering events occur) and the factors that drive variability including social-cognitive processing and anticipation. Dr. Jackson uses a multi-leveled and multidisciplinary approach, including brain imaging, behavioral assessment, and qualitative methods. He collaborates with researchers across the cognitive sciences (e.g., psychology, neuroscience, linguistics) and his work is/has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and internal NYU grants. Dr. Jackson also conducts research that is closer to clinical application, developing the Stuttering Anticipation Scale (SAS), conducting the first study on the impact of classic psychedelics on stuttering, and is beginning to examine the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on stuttering. In addition to his research, Dr. Jackson is a practicing speech-language pathologist with more than 15 years of experience and expertise in stuttering intervention. His experience as a person who stutters informs his research, practice, and teaching. Before joining NYU, Dr. Jackson was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Iowa. He received his PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
